Adulting: 16 ways to take care of yourself.

Adulting is hard. How not to Screw it up AND live better with these 16 tips.

There is a lot of  talk about what it does and does not mean to be an Adult these days..  "Adulting" more or less means...with it. Together. Someone who is completely in charge of themselves. And why wouldn't we obsess over this identity? This digital age is booming with getting answers NOW. We're asking the questions people have always had, but this time, we're doing it out loud, and we're giving each other answers.

The modern adult woman is very little like her subservient, idealistic past generation self. To be a adulting no longer necessarily means to be a wife, or mom, or pretty girl in a dress (although you can certainly be any or all of those things while Adulting). It means that you're someone who knows what you want, how to ask for it, and how to take care of yourself; To be confident about the things you know for sure, and honest about what you're not confident about yet. It means to seek real love when you want it, and not-so-real love when you want that, too. It's about becoming who you've always wanted to be, and meeting who you've always been halfway there.

Here are a few things modern women do to take care of themselves while Adulting:

Take Time to do NOTHING

Even if it's only 10 minutes in the shower, to just stand and breathe. JUST BE. Take care of what has be handled and appreciate the subtle but profound ability to just kick back and watch a movie and not think about anything else.

Dress for comfort and confidence, no matter what you wear.

Adulting isn't defined by being the most "stylish" or the most BFFs. Just focus more on striving to feel comfortable and confident each day. It's not to say they're insusceptible or beyond body image issues (who is?) or that they don't enjoy fashion, but it is to say that they can view it objectively enough that they're making steps toward improving how they see themselves, one radical not-giving-a-shit moment at a time.

Spend Time talking to REAL people in person.

The art of communication is dying on the TALK with friends, family, or your mom on the phone. Know the importance of connecting to a person, not just a screen. Pick up the phone and call someone today.

Take time to be Alone

Just be with YOU, even if it's only the few minutes.  But Daphne, it's so hard because I have kids now.... Waaaaaah. Join the club. Wake up a little earlier and enjoy the quiet of your home or send those tiny angels to bed on time and enjoy the quiet evening. The point is you need a little you time so you don't lose your shit.

Read More than your Facebook Feed.

It doesn't have to be a novel, but you can hammer out a couple chapters a day. Maybe it's a magazine or one of those daily devotionals that you'll probably get for Christmas anyway. Adulting means taking time to engage your mind as much as much as your body.

Go outside.

Get out there and get some vitamin D. It's important to get sunshine and fresh air. Park your car a little further and enjoy the walk. Each your lunch outside. Take a walk after dinner.

Cook one Meal a Day - Minimum

Not because cooking is what women do, but because cooking is what ADULTS do. It's grounding, and makes you appreciate what you consume. It's a beautifully honest part of being an adult, and even though Take-out is more convenient most of the time - that doesn't make it more rewarding. And remember breakfast is the easiest meal to cook anyway - get it out of the way and Adult hard starting with breakfast.

Tidy your Space

Taking care of what surrounds you is equatable to taking care of yourself. Surround yourself with a space that reflects how you feel. Neat and tidy goes a long way for relaxing while Adulting.

Drink more Water.

Because Adults don't skimp on the essentials. (mic drop)

Don't become Passive.

Disengaging with life is really the only way to fail at it, and Adult women know this. It doesn't matter what the situation is, as the saying goes, sometimes you win, and all the time, you learn. (I'm pretty sure that's the way I learned it)

Choose your own Thoughts.

And change them when YOU realize they haven't chosen them. Scarlett said, "I'll think about that tomorrow" - or don't think about it ever. You pick what lives in your head.

Take time to be Grateful for something.

Gratitude sets your attitude. Even if you are grateful for 15 minutes alone today. Adults realize that life is not about what you have or what you do so much as it's about your perspective of those things. Your gratitude grows in proportion to your decision to choose it, not in things to convince yourself you should be grateful for. Stop right now. What are you grateful for.
Boom. One down.

Determine the Purpose

Don't just do things, know why you are doing it - or what's the point? Even when work is frustrating, Adults are grateful they have a job. Even when they're exhausted and they don't feel like traveling to their significant other's great aunt's birthday party, Adults are grateful they have a significant other with an annoying great aunt in the first place. When it doesn't make sense - rethink the purpose.

Adults prioritize goals over Comfort.

Adulting isn't easy or everyone would do it. You have to work for what you want and when you get it, take the time to enjoy it before starting the next mountain climb. Adulting means exercising even if it's just a walk or a longer walk to your car. Adulting means caring what you put in your body so you can feel your best and so your little battery can keep on going and going.

Sleep

Adults sleep, we can not adult and stay up all night. Eye bags are NOT your friend - even if you can hide them with the BEST makeup tips ever.

Exist in Photographs

It's not how many photos you take, it's how many you are in that matters at the end of the road. You are amazing. Right now. You are loved and admired. And when people look at your portrait you will reflect that love back to them. And having a portrait that makes you feel good about yourself every time you look at it is priceless. Adulting means: Be in MORE Photos. Leave something REAL behind. Something you can touch and hold and cherish.

This year, as you are contemplating your New Year's resolutions - pick a few from this list. Adulting means striving to be your best you one step at a time and enjoying what you have and being comfortable in your skin. Live your best life. Start today.
